Project Launch at the British Council in Lagos
At the end of January, the project launched in Nigeria with a presentation delivered by Juliet and Emilia at the British Council in Lagos. Talking about 'Women’s Futures and Cultural Connection', Juliet and Emilia explained the challenges women in Cross River face when accessing maternal care and how art has the potential to instigate new perspectives on what better care means for women.
The audience threw back some great comments about the social and cultural pressures women feel after childbirth. While our project engages with 'bride fattening' practices of the Cross River region, south-eastern Nigeria, it transpired that there are diverse perspectives across Nigeria on the ideal body image of new mothers.
The event was also picked up by Nigerian newspapers, The Sun and Vanguard.
With thanks to the British Council in Lagos for hosting us and to a very engaged audience for a lively discussion!
